Proviron is the commercial name given to the hormone Mesterolone by Bayer, a dihydrotestosterone (DHT) derivative with strong similarities of many other anabolic steroids based on the DHT. The direct action of Proviron is very similar to stanozolol and in many circles the two are often compared. Although not an ideal compound for building muscle (not really any good for this purpose), the Proviron is useful with other steroids because of its unique ability to prevent the body from converting testosterone into estrogen, which would better anabolic effect of testosterone. This helps the bodybuilder in many ways. First, it helps reduce estrogenic side effects of steroids, such as water retention, decreased sexual desire, gynecomastia, etc.. In addition, the Proviron can help increase the power of testosterone in the body by releasing testosterone binding to sex hormone binding globulin.

Although this is very androgenic steroid, the anabolic effect which is considered too weak to muscle building. This is because the Proviron is rapidly reduced to inactive metabolites in muscle tissue, also a characteristic feature of dihydrotestosterone. The weak anabolic nature of this compound indicated a tendency to block the androgen receptor in muscle tissue, reducing the profits of other steroids more potent muscle building, also, this should not be taken seriously. In fact, due to its extremely high affinity for plasma protein binding, Proviron may actually work to increase the activity of other steroids by displacing a higher percentage into a free state.
