What is Accutane?

Accutane (isotretinoin) is a pill taken orally to treat individuals with very blemished skin. It’s part of a group of drugs known as retinoids, which are related to vitamin A. It typically is only prescribed if other medicines for the skin have not been effective.

What Does It Do?

Accutane reduces the amount of oil (sebum) secreted by the skin, preventing pores from getting clogged and acne from occurring. It also reduces inflammation in the skin and speeds healing of current acne.

What Is It Used For?

Accutane is used primarily to treat severe nodulocystic acne (cystic acne). It is also used in cases of moderate acne that did not respond to other therapies. The goal is to achieve long-term and permanent improvement.
